A few years ago, the Nigeria Government, through the Central Bank of Nigeria, introduced what’s called the Bank Verification Number, also called the BVN. Because it is mandatory, a lot of Nigerians with a bank account registered for it. Nevertheless, some people still have an issue with theirs and are looking for the BVN portal by which they can verify their BVN number.

A Brief Information About BVN
BVN is a biometric identification system implemented by the CBN. The aim of introducing it is to contain illegal banking transaction in the country. The number helps to reduce fraud as it is a number linked to all the account numbers of a bank user, no matter the number of bank accounts he or she has.
In order to generate the number and enforce the BVN usage, the CBN worked together with the Nigerian Interbank Settlement System (NIBSS), and this is the reason why the online BVN portal is hosted on the firm’s website.
Here is how to access and use the BVN portal of the NIBSS to verify your Bank Verification Number Details.
How to Access and Use the Online BVN Portal
- As stated earlier, the online BVN validation portal is hosted on NIBSS website, so visit the firm’s official website by clicking on this link
- After landing on the homepage of the website, location the menu called BVN at the top of the page and click on it
- The BVN page will load and you will see the detail about it and its benefits
- Also on the BVN page, you will see three options: The first option for linking the BVN to bank account – but it’s meant for Nigerians in the diaspora; the second option is “Validate BVN” – and this is the option that will take you to the online BVN portal; the third option, when clicked on, will download a PDF that lists the requirement for BVN certification.
- Now click on the “Validate BVN” option
- On the page, supply your BVN number in the box that asks for it
- Then supply the Date of Birth you used while registering for the BVN. In case you have forgotten your BN number, read this post to see how you can check it
- Then click on the Search button
- You will be taken to a page where you will be asked to pay NGN25 for the verification
- Choose your preferred payment option and follow the payment instruction
- After that, the online BVN portal will confirm how valid your BVN this, and that’s all.
Note that to use the online BVN validation portal, you must already have a Bank Verification Number. If you don’t, go to the nearest bank and register for it. You can go to any bank and then later go to your bank to link it with your account. However, from experience, it is advisable you register for BVN directly in your bank. This is because, if you have an issue with your biodata in the future, it will be easy for your bank to correct the information.
