Facebook is a chat giant – it owns itself, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Instagram. Now, the IT company is going into VPN business. It was earlier reported that the company bought Onavo, a VPN service provider, and to popularise the service, an icon that leads to the app on App Store has been placed on the latest version of the Facebook app for iOS.
However, from experts’ perspective, Facebook doesn’t qualify to be a VPN provider because of its records of handling users privacy. For this reason, they believe using Onavo is risky as Facebook is likely to use the app to advance its users data mining arsenal, especially outside of Facebook.
If you are running the latest version of the Facebook app on your iOS device, you will the option called “Protect” on the menu. As advised by experts, please don’t tap on the option. If you mistakenly tap on it, don’t install the Onavo VPN app.
At the moment, the “Protect” option isn’t available on the Android Facebook app. But definitely, it will be available soon. So, be informed and stay away from Facebook’s Protection.
