To me, one of the most annoying thing in the world is for me to have airtime on my phone but unable to make calls or send text messages. It’s very frustrating. Many of the times, if SMS isn’t going through on a phone, it is a problem directly from the network provider. However, at times, it can issue with the MTN message center number.
The service center number is responsible for coordinating how SMS is received and sent on the network carrier. Therefore, it is important to check and make sure that the number is correct whenever you have a problem sending and receiving text messages. Understanding the Short Message Service Center
For users of carrier networks to send and receive SMS (Short Message Service), a Short Message Service Center (SMSC) is required. When you launch your SMS app and type out your message and tap on send, what happens next is that that message, first of all, goes to the SMSC; from there, it gets delivered to the final destination – the SIM card of the recipient. Therefore, the purpose of this center is to help users store, forward, convert, and deliver SMS messages.
The center helps to route SMS from one user to another. If the recipient SIM card is offline, SMSC temporarily stores the SMS until the SIM comes online and then deliver the message.
Each Network Has Its Center Number
To make things not get complicated in the cyberspace where SMSC is located, each network provider has its own center number; thus, MTN message center number helps to routes message for the users of the network provider. When you buy a new SIM for your phone or switch your SIM to another phone, the network provider would automatically adjust the number.
However, if this number is tampered with, you wouldn’t be able to send and receive text messages. Then locate the “SMS service center” or something related to that. Finally, paste the number above in the provided box and tap OK to activate the number.
Everything being equal, you should be able to send and receive SMS now.
MTN Message Center Number: When Issue Isn’t Yet Fix
It is possible to paste the above MTN message center number in your settings but yet the issue isn’t resolved. When this happens, it can be that your SMS storage is full – if they are being saved into the SIM card memory; this can prevent you from receiving new text messages, as there is no space to store them – you should be able to send text messages, though.
If you can send but can’t receive, just delete some of your old SMS, and the problem should be solved. In a scenario when you have pasted the correct MTN message center number but can neither send or receive an SMS, your last resort is to speak to a customer care agent.
You can speak to an agent by calling 180 and following the voice prompt. MTN also has a self-service number – 181. By following the voice command when you call the self-service number, you can get the issue fixed. A faster way is to send a tweet on Twitter. The official customer care handle of MTN on Twitter is @MTN180. Send them a tweet about the issue and they would help you to resolve it. Other means of speaking to MTN agent is by sending a WhatsApp message to 09033000002 or 09033000005.
