Pirate Bay receives millions of pageviews per day, but unfortunately, it can’t generate money from the pageviews. This is because Adsense and other ad networks will never approve such a website that allows publishing thousands of pirated digital copyright products every day.
The website has only a few options to make money, and a new report stated that the torrent site has just developed a new way to generate money, through hijacking the CPU of users. But it isn’t for what you might be thinking!
The hijacking isn’t to hack into the system of users and steal credit card information – it is to mine a digital currency.
This new development was discovered by TPB’s visitors, who noticed a JavaScript that initiates the currency mining command on the torrent site. What the script does is to use computer resources of the user to mine a digital currency called Monero coins.
When the script starts the mining, the CPU usage of the users of the torrent site will significantly increase; however, the users may not notice this, if their CPU is powerful. For users with not so powerful CPU, data processing on their computer may experience a little slowdown.
The Interesting thing is that Pirate Bay didn’t deny this act; the torrent site confirmed the digital currency JavaScript to TorrentFreak, saying the script is still in the test mode. The big plan for the torrent site is to fully implement the script and use it to generate constant revenue for the site.
At the moment, the JavaScript has only been installed on the search result page and category listing page. Some users of the site claimed they were able to stop the script from hijacking their CPU, by using ad blockers and adjusting their browser’s setting.
Perhaps that will be the only way to stop Pirate Bay from hijacking the CPU of you and me too.
Let me hear from you; will you stop using Pirate Bay, in the name of fearing that your CPU would be hijacked?
